Which cylinder-head faults Doc Serwis can fix

1

Warped cylinder-head face

This is a common result of engine overheating. Critical temperatures distort the metal, the mating face with the block is no longer flat, and the head gasket loses its seal. We check the face with a straight edge and feeler gauges. If the deviation is beyond spec, the face is ground back to geometry. It is a basic step in head repair after overheating and restores a tight gasket seat.

2

Cracks in the head casting

Cracks appear after sharp temperature swings, severe overheating or mechanical impact. The bridges between valve seats and the coolant passages are at risk. We find cracks by pressure testing and by magnetic-particle or dye-penetrant inspection. Repairing a cracked block and head is technically demanding: depending on location and type, we use TIG welding, brazing or specialist inserts. That can save the part and avoid a full replacement.

3

Worn valves, seats and guides

Valves and seats wear gradually from long use, incorrect clearances or poor fuel. The valve no longer seats, compression falls and the engine misfires. During block and head work Doc Serwis lapp valves, recuts seats and replaces worn valves, seats or guide bushes. Every part is checked against the manufacturer’s specification so the repair lasts.

4

Loss of cylinder-head sealing

A sealed head is mandatory for normal engine running. Any failed seal mixes fluids, drops cylinder pressure and causes overheating. We pressure-test with water or air so even microscopic leaks that cannot be seen by eye are found. If needed we regenerate the head: new seals or restored damaged surfaces.

What damages a cylinder head

The head is damaged by engine overheating, normal wear or mechanical injury. At Doc Serwis we first establish what loaded the head, and only then decide whether to restore it.

Engine overheating

Critical temperature distorts the metal: the face is no longer flat, the gasket loses its seal, and cracks appear in the galleries.

Normal wear

Valves, seats and guides wear over years: compression falls and misfires appear even without overheating.

Head

Broken timing belt

Valves meet pistons. Seats, guides and the casting suffer — sometimes with deformed combustion chambers.

Hydrolock

Liquid in the cylinder does not compress. The shock hits the valve gear and the head face, often with piston-group damage too.

The cylinder head is one of the critical parts of an internal-combustion engine. It houses the valves, camshafts, cooling and lubrication galleries, combustion chambers and, depending on the design, other components. Hot gases, coolant and engine oil all pass through it, so it works under constant thermal and mechanical load.

What signs suggest the cylinder head needs repair?

A number of typical signs can point to a head fault:

  • white or blue exhaust smoke that does not clear after warm-up;
  • oil in the coolant expansion tank, or coolant in the sump;
  • a regular drop in coolant level with no visible leak;
  • unstable running, misfire or hesitation when revving;
  • engine overheating, with the temperature gauge often in the red;
  • a clear drop in cooling-system pressure.

Those signs do not always mean the cylinder head itself is at fault — similar symptoms can come from other engine or related-system problems. That is why any work starts with a full diagnosis, so the technician confirms the cause instead of guessing. At Doc Serwis in Warsaw every case is assessed individually, and work starts only after a confirmed specialist conclusion.

How cylinder-head repair is done at Doc Serwis

Head work at Doc Serwis follows a clear sequence that reduces mistakes and return visits.

First comes an initial diagnosis: the technician studies the symptoms, reads fault codes and forms a preliminary cause. The engine is then stripped and the head removed for a close inspection. On the bench we check face geometry, gallery sealing and the condition of valves, seats, guides and camshafts.

Defecting produces a list of operations and an agreed price for repairing a cracked block or other damage found. Work starts only after you confirm the order. Depending on the faults this may be face grinding, welding, valve-gear replacement or seal restoration. After repair every part is checked again, the head is refitted, and the engine is assembled and set up.

Once the engine is running the technician checks for leaks, stable running at different loads and temperature readings. You get the car back with a clear explanation of the work. Cylinder-head repair pricing at Doc Serwis is set individually after diagnosis and an exact scope, with no hidden extras.

Frequently asked questions

A correctly done rebuild returns the head to a condition comparable with a new part. Head repair costs far less than a new component and typically saves 60–70% of the sum. Beyond the saving, regeneration is often the only option for rare or discontinued engines for which new parts simply cannot be found.

Not always. If the damage is too severe — large cracks in critical zones, deep corrosion or distortion that grinding cannot correct — restoration may be technically unsound or uneconomic. In those cases Doc Serwis says so honestly and helps choose an alternative: a used unit or a new one. Cylinder repair, price and whether it is worth doing are always judged after full defecting, not by eye.

In most cases — yes. Overheating is the most common reason for head-related visits. The outcome still depends on how far the damage has gone. If the face is warped but there are no cracks, grinding alone may be enough. If cracks have appeared, they are repaired. If overheating destroyed the piston group or scored the bores, the scope grows substantially. That is why delay is costly: the sooner the car reaches the workshop after overheating symptoms, the better the chance of a successful and relatively inexpensive rebuild.

Yes, in many cases it is realistic. Cracked cylinder liners and cracks in the head casting are repaired by TIG welding or specialist inserts. Success depends on pinpointing the crack and on the technician’s skill. Small cracks in non-critical zones are fixed in almost every case. It is harder when a crack runs between valve seats or through coolant passages. At Doc Serwis every such case is judged individually, and you get an honest forecast before work starts.
