What makes diesel-engine repair different

A diesel engine differs from a petrol one in how the fuel is ignited.

The mixture fires from compression, not from a spark. Cylinder pressure is therefore much higher, and the load on every assembly is more intense. That is why diesel-engine repair always means a combined check of several systems at once.

  1. Compression in the cylinders is checked first — it shows the real condition of the pistons, rings and valves. Low compression points to wear or mechanical damage that is not always visible from outside.

  2. In parallel we diagnose the fuel system: the high-pressure pump, injectors and fuel lines. A faulty injector breaks even fuel spray, so the engine starts to misfire, loses power and smokes.

  3. The cooling system is checked as well, because overheating is one of the most common causes of serious diesel damage. Without checking these assemblies even a well-repaired engine can fail again in a short time.

Which diesel-engine faults we repair

Diesel-engine faults vary: some need only a partial intervention, others a full overhaul with the unit stripped and the main assemblies replaced. We take in cars with faults such as:

  1. Wear in the cylinder-piston group

A drop in compression, higher oil use, blue smoke.

  2. Cylinder-head faults

Cracks, warping, failed valves or seats.

  3. Failed gaskets and seals

Coolant entering the combustion chamber or the sump.

  4. Mechanical damage

Scoring on the cylinder bore, a broken con-rod, a failed crankshaft.

  5. Oil and coolant leaks

Through worn seals, gaskets or joints.

  6. Overheating damage

Distorted parts, head damage, a destroyed head gasket.

Diesel-engine rebuild stages at Doc Serwis

Diesel-engine rebuilds at Doc Serwis follow a fixed order that does not skip important steps:

  1. 1

    Diagnosis

A computer read of fault codes, a visual inspection, compression and fuel-system pressure measurements.

  2. 2

    Pinpointing the fault

Establishing the exact cause of the failure from the test results.

  3. 3

    Defecting

Stripping the engine and inspecting every part in detail to judge the degree of wear.

  4. 4

    Agreeing the scope of work

Technicians agree the work list and the cost with the owner before repair starts.

  5. 5

    Repair or replacement of parts

Restoring or replacing worn and damaged parts using quality components.

  6. 6

    Assembling the engine

Fitting every assembly to the technical spec and the correct tightening torques.

  7. 7

    A running check

Starting the engine, checking parameters under load, looking for leaks and unusual noises.

If the engine has lost power, fuel use has risen or smoke has appeared from the exhaust — do not put off seeing a technician.
