Signs that your car air conditioning needs recharging
Air-conditioning performance rarely drops off all at once. A driver can go a long time without noticing the slight difference in the temperature of the air coming into the cabin. Yet a lower refrigerant charge changes the pressure in the circuit and the conditions the compressor works in, so diagnostics are worth booking as soon as the first symptoms appear.
The most common signs that the air-conditioning system needs checking are:
- the air from the vents is noticeably warmer than it used to be;
- the cabin takes longer to cool down after the A/C is switched on;
- the air conditioning has to run longer to reach a comfortable temperature;
- the windows mist up more often because the air is not being dried properly;
- an unpleasant smell comes from the vents;
- the compressor cuts in oddly, runs unevenly, or the system shuts down from time to time;
- the air conditioning stops cooling the cabin properly when standing still or driving slowly.
Symptoms like these do not always come down to a low refrigerant charge. The cause may be a leak in the circuit, a faulty compressor, condenser, drier, fan or electrical component. That is why the service starts with diagnostics rather than simply topping the refrigerant up.
How the service is staged at Doc Serwis
A proper air-conditioning service is more than adding refrigerant through the service port. The procedure covers recovering what is left of the old charge, checking the circuit parameters, evacuating the system, testing it for leaks and refilling it to the factory specification. - First the mechanic assesses how the system is working, checks the pressures and looks for signs of a possible leak. This check is what explains why the cooling has fallen off. If the system is damaged, filling it without fixing the fault makes little sense;
- After that first check the refrigerant is recovered from the system with dedicated equipment. The amount recovered is recorded and compared with the nominal charge specified by the car manufacturer. The difference between the two shows the scale of the loss. A small, natural drop in level and a serious shortfall can have quite different causes, so the figure feeds into the rest of the diagnostics;
- The next stage is evacuating the circuit. Air and moisture, both of which harm the air conditioning, are drawn out of the system. At the same time the mechanic watches how the system behaves under vacuum. If the readings move the wrong way, that can point to a leak and the need for a further check;
- Once the circuit is confirmed sound, the car air conditioning is charged with refrigerant up to the figure set by the manufacturer. Along with the refrigerant we check the required amount of oil, which circulates through the system and lubricates the compressor. Too much or too little of either is bad for the hardware, so the quantity is taken from the technical data for that particular car;
- The final stage is starting the air conditioning and checking how it performs. We look at the system readings, how steadily it cools and how the compressor behaves. If the diagnostics or the service turned up a fault, the mechanic will say which components need repairing.
