How a suspension spring replacement works in Warsaw at Doc Serwis
Our mechanics check the springs, dampers, top mount bearings, gaiters and bump stops - every part that works directly with the spring. The point is not to miss related damage and have you back at the workshop a month later.
The procedure itself depends on the type of suspension the car has. With a MacPherson strut, the most common front-axle design on passenger cars, removing the spring means taking the whole strut assembly out. The spring is compressed with a dedicated spring compressor, the assembly is stripped and the worn part is replaced. On multi-link or torsion-bar suspensions, where the spring sits separately from the damper, the job can be technically simpler, but it demands just as much care.
Doc Serwis can supply different types of spring, depending on what the customer needs:
- standard - to restore the factory suspension characteristics;
- uprated - for cars running LPG or regularly carrying heavy loads;
- sports and lowering springs - to change the car's handling and stance.
The type of spring changes how the car behaves on the road, so the mechanics always agree it with the owner before fitting the spring to the damper. A firm rule at our workshop is that suspension springs are replaced in pairs on an axle, even when only one of them has failed. A new spring has a different rate from a worn one, and leaving the old one in place makes the suspension work unevenly. The result: the car leans in corners and the dampers and tyres wear faster. Replacing them in pairs is the only way to keep the suspension properly balanced across an axle.
Once the new springs are in, the wheel geometry is always checked on a 3D alignment rig. Changing the ride height always affects the wheel angles, so a camber and toe adjustment is an integral part of the job, not an optional extra.
Problems with suspension?
Book suspension repair and drive confidently!
A worn or broken suspension spring is more than a comfort problem. It is a genuine safety risk: the car starts to sit unevenly, handling deteriorates and the load on the dampers, control arms and top mount bearings goes up. Left too long, one failed part drags a chain of expensive failures behind it. At Doc Serwis in Warsaw we replace suspension springs on every make and model, from budget hatchbacks to premium saloons and SUVs. The work follows a suspension diagnosis (to be sure the spring really is the culprit), with the price agreed openly and a warranty on the work carried out.
What makes up the cost of replacing a car's springs
The cost of replacing a car's springs is made up of several elements, each of which depends on the particular car and the scope of work needed:
- The type and layout of the suspension. Changing front springs on a MacPherson strut and changing a rear spring on a multi-link axle differ considerably in labour time. The harder the spring is to reach, the longer the job takes;
- The type of spring. Standard springs cost less, uprated and sports springs come out dearer. However involved the replacement turns out to be, the final price is always set individually, after the diagnosis and once the customer's wishes are clear;
- The condition of the surrounding parts. During the diagnosis the mechanics may find further faults directly tied to how the suspension works. Most often they recommend doing at the same time:
- replacing the strut top mount bearing - it wears along with the spring and, if ignored, becomes a source of knocking and crunching felt through the steering wheel;
- replacing the damper gaiter and bump stop - these protective parts keep dirt off the piston rod and limit suspension travel;
- replacing or repairing the damper itself if it has started to weep oil or has gone soft;
- a camber and toe alignment, which is mandatory after any work on the springs.
Any additional work is agreed with the customer before it begins. The price for a suspension spring replacement is fixed up front, so there are no hidden extras once you collect the car. If the inspection turns up faults that are not urgent, the mechanics mention them separately, with no pressure and no upselling.

Frequently Asked Questions
On McPherson struts, replacing a suspension spring takes roughly one and a half to two man-hours per side. On a multi-link axle, where the spring sits separately from the damper, the work can be quicker. But since a single spring replacement at Doc Serwis is always done in pairs on the axle, and the geometry is checked afterwards, it is worth allowing three to four hours for the whole visit. That way everything gets done without rushing and the car leaves fully ready to drive.
Technically a single spring can be changed, and paying for one operation instead of two looks cheaper at first glance. In practice it works out the other way round. A new spring will always be noticeably stiffer than the worn one on the other side of the axle. That leaves a permanent imbalance: the car leans in corners, the dampers and tyres wear faster, and sooner or later you have to come back for the second spring anyway, on a separate visit and a separate bill. Replacing suspension springs as a pair costs a little more up front, but ends up cheaper and safer.
Yes, it is mandatory. A suspension spring replacement at Doc Serwis always finishes with a geometry check on the 3D alignment rig, because a new spring changes the ride height and with it the wheel angles. Without that adjustment the tyres wear unevenly and the car may pull to one side when driving straight. Checking and correcting the geometry after the old springs come out and the new ones go in is not an optional extra but the logical end of the job, giving full safety and correct road behaviour.
