How a control arm bush replacement runs at our workshop

The mechanic assesses the overall condition of the running gear on the ramp and checks the sump guard and the subframe. We go through the driver's complaints: exactly where the knock is heard, when it appeared and what makes it worse;

Checking for play and a road test.

Once everything is back together we check that there is no unwanted play in the suspension. The car goes out for a short test drive to confirm the knocking is gone and that it behaves properly on the road;

The price of a bush replacement is made up of several factors. The main one is how many bushes need replacing and where they sit within the suspension. The harder a bush is to reach, the longer the strip-down takes. Front bushes cost more on most cars, because the front suspension is structurally more complex: the control arms, the subframe and the anti-roll bars are joined at a greater number of mounting points. The price also depends on the make and model. On premium cars and off-roaders the bushes are physically larger and call for a more powerful press. Rear bushes often work out cheaper on simple cars with a torsion-beam rear axle, but on cars with independent rear suspension (a multi-link design) the job can be even bigger than at the front. The parts themselves are the other part of the bill. Genuine parts cost more than equivalents from proven aftermarket brands, but the mechanic will always help you find the best balance of price and service life for your particular car. In most cases replacing the bushes on one axle takes 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the suspension layout and the condition of the fixings. Seized bolts and heavily corroded parts can push that out. Doing both axles at once usually cuts the total time, because some of the strip-down work overlaps. The mechanic gives you an exact figure once the car has been looked over.

Technically speaking, it is advisable. If one bush on an axle has given up, the other is usually worn to a similar degree, since both have covered the same mileage under the same loads. Replacing only one part makes the suspension work unevenly, because the new component has a different stiffness from the worn one next to it. That shows up in the handling and shortens the life of the new bush. The exception is a bush damaged mechanically — after hitting a large stone, for instance — while the other still has plenty of life left. In that case the mechanic will assess both and give you a firm recommendation.

In most cases, yes. Rubber-metal bushes affect the suspension geometry: a worn part lets the control arm move out of its designed position, and the car gradually "gets used" to the wrong angles. Once the new components are in, the suspension returns to its factory geometry and the wheel angles have to be checked and reset.
