Which types of brake line we can replace at our workshop

At Doc Serwis we replace both main types of brake line — rigid pipes and flexible hoses. Each has its own job in the hydraulic brake system and calls for a different approach during the repair:

Rigid brake pipes.

Made from galvanised steel, brass or a copper-nickel alloy. Their job is to carry brake fluid from the master cylinder — often by way of the ABS pump — out to the edges of the body, near the wheel arches. They run under the floor of the car and have a fixed profile, so replacing them calls for special tools to bend and form the new sections of pipe;

Flexible brake hoses.

They are the continuation of the rigid pipes, and it is they that complete the fluid's path from the wheel arches to the brake calipers. Their rubber construction with a textile or metal braid copes with constant movement, because the hoses travel with the suspension and the steering knuckles. Inside the calipers the pistons, fed with fluid pressure, extend and push the pads against the discs, so braking begins.

The final cost of a brake line replacement comes down to several factors:

  • The type and number of parts being replaced. One flexible hose is one figure; replacing several rigid sections along the whole run is quite another. The cost of a brake line replacement rises in proportion to the amount of work, so if corrosion has eaten a whole circuit the price comes out far higher than a one-off repair of a single hose;
  • The material of the pipes. Copper or brass sections cost more than standard steel ones, but they are easier to fit in awkward places. Because a brake line in copper alloy can push the price up, that choice makes sense where the routing is complicated or the local climate is damp;
  • How accessible the particular component is. On some cars getting to the hoses takes a couple of minutes. On others you have to drop the subframe, remove a heat shield or even part of the suspension. That is why the price of a brake line replacement can climb with the extra hours of the mechanic's time;
  • Fluid change and bleeding. Any brake line replacement always includes bleeding the system and topping up or fully changing the brake fluid. Without that the job is not finished properly. This step adds roughly 30-45 minutes to the total time.

It all depends on the type of component, the operating conditions and the quality of the materials:

  • Flexible rubber hoses wear out sooner. The main reasons are the rubber ageing under ultraviolet light and temperature swings, mechanical damage from stone strikes, and careless pad or caliper work that leaves a hose twisted or accidentally nicked. As a rule they are worth inspecting every 5-8 years or every 100 000 km.
  • Rigid brake pipes are far tougher and can last more than 10 years. Even so they are vulnerable to corrosion, especially in regions where the roads are heavily salted in winter. Mechanical damage to rigid pipes is rarer, but it does happen after a heavy impact or a collision.

The signs of wear split into those you can see with the car up on the lift and those that make themselves felt under braking. Some are barely noticeable, which is why regular checks are not over-caution but part of running a car safely. The main signs are:

  • Corrosion and rust on the surface of the pipes. Heavy corrosion on steel lines is the first warning. Rust locally thins the wall of the pipe and sharply reduces its ability to hold working pressure. Rigid lines corrode most often on bends and formed curves, where moisture collects. Besides external corrosion, pipes can break down from the inside once water builds up in the brake fluid and turns it into an aggressive medium;
  • Visible patches of fluid under the car. Leaking brake fluid has a distinctly oily look and a pale yellow or straw colour. Pay particular attention to the area under the rear wheels, because that is where the pipes suffer most from road salt and grit. Even faint damp marks around the suspension after an overnight stop are worth a check;
  • A soft or "sinking" brake pedal. If the pedal sinks deep when you press it, or the brakes only bite at the end of the travel, that points straight to a loss of pressure in the system. Air drawn in through a tiny defect in a hose does much the same: the bubbles compress instead of transmitting the effort. If the pedal briefly "firms up" after a few pumps, the system is most likely full of air. In that case stop immediately and do not drive on;
  • Mechanical damage to the rubber hoses. Rubber ages over time, loses its flexibility and turns brittle, and fine cracks appear on the surface. It is easy to check — just bend the hose gently by hand. Cracks or bulges show up at once. Rubber parts can also be damaged by stone strikes or chafed by contact with suspension components;
  • Reduced braking performance. A longer stopping distance, or a feeling that the car pulls to one side under braking, can point to internal damage inside a hose that is partly choking the flow of fluid to one wheel. Uneven braking caused by a restricted flow is a dangerous symptom and needs looking at straight away. A low brake fluid warning light on the dashboard is a further sign.

Copper pipe is easier to form right on the vehicle, while steel needs a profile prepared in advance. Whichever type is fitted, we always pressure-test the system for leaks and bleed it afterwards.


A flexible hose can be changed at home if you have basic skills and ordinary tools. Rigid pipes, though, are a job for a workshop: you need special tools for cutting the thread and bending the metal, and the system has to be bled once everything is fitted. Repairing brake lines yourself without the right equipment can leave you with a joint that does not seal, and that is a direct safety risk.

The time depends on the type of component and how hard it is to reach:

  • Flexible rubber hose: 0.5-1 hour.
  • Rigid section, easy access: 1-1.5 hours.
  • Rigid section, awkward access: 2-4 hours.
  • All rigid pipes: 4-8 hours.
