When to change the lubricant in an automatic transmission? Debunking myths and discovering reality
There is perhaps the most controversy among car owners around the maintenance of automatic transmissions (automatic transmission). Some say that the lubricant is "eternal", others say that replacing it can "kill" the box. Where is the truth?
We analyze the main myths that can cost you a transmission overhaul.
Myth number 1: "Lubricant in the automatic transmission is filled for the entire life of the car"
Reality:This is the most dangerous marketing ploy. Manufacturers do write this in service books, but by "service life" they mean a warranty period (usually 100-150 thousand km or 3-5 years). After that, the box, according to the manufacturer's idea, should be replaced along with the car. In fact, transmission fluid (ATF) loses its lubricating properties over time, oxidizes and accumulates friction wear products.
Myth number 2: "If the box runs smoothly, you don't need to change the lubricant"
Reality:When the first symptoms appear (foaming, delays, jerks), changing the lubricant may no longer help. Wear occurs gradually. Pure lubrication is the prevention, not the cure, of mechanical breakdowns. If you wait for symptoms, you risk getting a repair bill that is 10 times the cost of changing the lubricant.
Myth No. 3: "After changing the lubricant, the old box may fail"
Reality:This happens only when the lubricant has not been changed for too long (for example, 200 thousand km). The new fluid has high cleaning properties - it washes out old deposits that can clog the thin channels of the valve body. That is why it is important to follow the regulations, and not wait for a "critical" run.
When do you really need to change the lubricant?
Technicians recommend adhering to the following intervals:
- Classic torque converter:every 40,000 – 60,000 km.
- Variator (CVT):every 30,000 - 40,000 km (they are very sensitive to the purity of the liquid).
- Robotic gearboxes (DSG, Powershift):every 60,000 km (depending on the type of clutch).
Important:If you often stand in traffic jams, practice aggressive driving or tow trailers, the interval should be reduced by 20-30%.
Prolong the life of your automatic transmission!
Do not wait for the box to start "capricious". Timely lubricant replacement is a guarantee of smooth operation and longevity of your car. Our masters will diagnose the condition of the liquid (color, smell, presence of chips) and select the best replacement method - partial or full (hardware).
